Here’s the reason. Everyday our bodies are put in harms way. Sitting or standing too long at work, staring at a computer or cell phone for hours on end, long commutes, the list goes on and on. We are forced to do so many things that are hard on our spine and our joints but we do very little to actually help our bodies recover from this abuse.
I mean really, when was the last time after a long day at work you came home and did a session of yoga or stretching to help your body recover. Unless you’re in significant or chronic pain, chances are this isn’t going to happen, you’re too busy. You just don’t “have time”!
And there’s the problem. Everyday we put our bodies through this repetitive abuse and do virtually nothing to recover from it. The damage is not always obvious right away, maybe a stiff neck or back, a headache or just general tension and discomfort. But because we don’t do anything positive for our bodies to address the abuse we wake up one day and we’re in PAIN. True, honest to God pain because all of those little daily abuses have added up and now we have a “real” problem.
So what does this have to do with the WebMD study? If we would simply take a proactive approach to taking care of our spine, our joints and our muscular system they wouldn’t be the #1 cause of disability in America. More importantly, we would have much better quality of lives for many more years and as we age have MUCH LESS disability and limitation. And that’s not just some pie in the sky dream, I see this play out in our practices every single day. We have patients in their 70’s and 80’s who have been proactive with their health that could outperform some of my patients in their 40’s and 50’s! It’s both inspiring and sad to see depending on which end you’re on.
